JACKSON—Gov. Phil Bryant issued a Writ of Election setting Jan. 15, 2013, as the date for the election to fill the seat of Sen. Bennie Turner.
Senate District 16 spans across Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee and Oktibbeha counties.
“Holding the special election in January means the citizens of these four counties will be properly represented as soon as possible in the next legislative session,” Gov. Bryant said. “This legislative session will tackle many important issues, and it is critical District 16 be represented in those decisions.”
The qualifying deadline for candidates is Dec. 17, 2012.
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes, runoff is Feb. 5, 2013.
